Aurora forecast looking excellent

Tonight, Thursday night into Friday morning, auroras could be active. We could see Kp 4. Friday night into Saturday day, the aurora could become storm levels as the first incoming CME is due to hit. Kp 5 or 6 is expected sometime on Friday. The second CME is due to hit sometime Saturday.

This all means that we may get 3 nights in a row of fantastic auroras. As the Kp level rises, the potential of aurora being seen further south is possible. As forecast, at Kp 6, many northern states may be able to catch the show. All of Canada, and all of Alaska may see lights. Northern Europe, and southern New Zealand and southern Australia may see lights as well. Too much summer sun in Antarctica. This of course, for everyone, weather dependant on seeing clear skies.

We always get the question, “What about my state?”. The following states have a chance at seeing northern lights Friday night and Saturday night: ME, VT, NH, MA, NY (not the city), PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN, IA, MO, ND, SD, NE, MT, WY, ID, OR, WA. Other states near the states listed have a smaller chance. You MUST get away from light pollution. You will NOT be able to see the aurora from a big city in which you can not normally see thousands of stars. Typically, you need to be at least an hour away from a big city. Look north. Have no obstruction or light pollution toward the north. A perfect spot would be on top a mountain or hill, north facing a lake or field, or flat land with no trees.
